Anathema hailing from Liverpool (England) started life as a Doom/Gothic band. In 1990 Anathema released their first demo entitled 'An Iliad Of Woes' which showed the potential that Anathema had. A short time after in 1991 Anathema released the much better recorded 'All Faith Is Lost' which is where people first heard classic songs such as 'They Die' (later to be released as a single) and Crestfallen.
Anathema were embraced into the UK metal scene with open arms and soon became 1 of the major forces within the UK heavy metal scene with bands such as My Dying Bride and Cradle Of Filth.
For a long time Anathema continued to release classic Doom E.P.'s and albums with Gothic overtones such as The Crestfallen, Serenades (which contains a version of my all time favorite Anathema tracks Sleepless), The Silent Enigma and Eternity.
In 1998 Anathema started to change direction with their release of Alternative 4 which was a lot less Gothic and more of a hard rock nature but still a great album. As Anathema moved on so did their albums, further from their grass roots. Much of their new material can still at times hint at a harder and darker side of the bands history but in a much less Gothic nature. Songs such as Forgotten Hopes (from The Judgement album) are very emotional yet very gentile while Pulled Under At 2000 Meters Per Second (from A Natural Disaster) show a somewhat more manic nature.
In 2004 Anathema suffered as a result of Music For Nations being dissolved into its parent company Zomba Records Group. Zomba Records were very selective on which contracts they would continue with and unfortunately Anathema's contract was not 1 of them.
Ever since Anathema have been hunting for a record deal (having reportedly rejected some offers from smaller labels) while still recording and touring under their own esteem.
